C&O Historical Society Announces New Series Book: Music of the C&O

Discovering the Stories, Songs, and History Inspired by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway

CLIFTON FORGE, VA — Railroads have long been a popular theme in American folk music. For generations, railroad songs have captured the experiences of workers, travelers, communities, and the changing American landscape. Railroads connected people and places, and their influence on American life can be heard in countless songs.

Among America’s railroads, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway holds a particularly fascinating place in this musical history. Directly or indirectly, the C&O is the subject of at least twenty songs, spanning a remarkable range of themes and styles—perhaps more than any other single railroad.

The C&O Historical Society’s newest series book, Music of the C&O, explores this fascinating connection between the railroad and American music. The book examines songs associated with the C&O, drawing upon available lyrics, musical scores, historical records, photographs, and other sources to uncover the stories behind the music.

Readers will discover when and by whom songs were recorded or published, the C&O history connected to the events described in the songs, and the often-complicated histories surrounding their publication and performance. Some songs appeared under different titles, while some performers changed their names during their careers, adding another layer of mystery to the history of these musical works.

Not every song included in the book would traditionally be classified as a folk song. However, each has a meaningful connection to the C&O and has been included because of its place in the railroad’s musical history.

From stories of train wrecks and railroad heroes to famous C&O trains and the people who encountered them, Music of the C&O reveals how songs can preserve history in ways that go far beyond music and lyrics. The book also includes biographies, historical narratives, photographs, and stories that help place these songs within the broader history of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and the communities it served.

Book Review

One reader admitted to initially being skeptical when the Society announced Music of the C&O, wondering how there could possibly be enough material about the subject to fill an entire book. That skepticism quickly disappeared upon reading the finished work.

“Upon the book’s arrival, my curiosity and excitement grew as I anticipated its contents. To my astonishment, I found it to be truly captivating.”

The reviewer described the book as “exceptionally interesting and engaging,” noting its combination of remarkable photographs, folk music, railroad history, historical narratives, and songs about train wrecks, railroad heroes, and the people connected to the railroad.

The book also explores the history of renowned C&O trains and includes biographies that provide additional insight into the people behind the stories.

As the reviewer observed, the history and songs created by individuals are not simply music or lyrics—they preserve a rich history of their own.

“Therefore, this book transcends a narrow focus on Chesapeake & Ohio Music; it encompasses so much more!”

Music of the C&O offers readers an opportunity to experience the “Mighty C&O” through the music inspired by the railroad and the people, places, and events connected to it. As the book demonstrates, the legacy of the C&O continues to live on—not only in photographs, records, and historical documents, but also in music.

For anyone interested in railroad history, American folk music, or the stories of the people who lived and worked along the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, Music of the C&O offers a fascinating journey into a unique part of American history.
