IN YEARS GONE BY a popular fundraiser employed by civic groups across America was a stage play whose theme was a “Womanless Wedding.” The CVT has several photos of these productions that took place over the years. The opportunity to see some of Russell County’s most hirsute and rugged belles displaying their charms was apparently irresistible because the plays drew large crowds. Cast members were good sports and their efforts yielded much-needed dollars for community and school improvements.
The pictures you see here were taken in April of 1972 at Castlewood High School during what may have been the last performance of this type in our community. I have deliberately omitted the names of the cast so you can enjoy figuring out who is who. Even though the photos are grainy, I think you will recognize cast members as well as delighted spectators in the audience.
We’ve featured serious articles of late. This one, like the play itself, is just for fun.
