Eastside Softball claims Cumberland District Title

The Lady Spartans won the regular season Cumberland District Championship in dramatic fashion this week.  Friday May 4th Eastside began a softball game against J.I. Burton that was stopped due to rain. Thursday May 10th, the Lady Spartans defeated Rye Cove 4 to 0, placing them in a tie for the Cumberland District Championship if they were able to get past Burton when the game resumed. Eastside pitcher Elizabeth Brace scattered 6 hits and struck out 7 leading the Lady Spartans to the win. Lexie King was 1-2 with a double and scored a run. Kacie Jones added a run scoring double for Eastside. Ashley Smith led Rye Cove with two base hits. Haley Tomlinson allowed just 5 hits taking the loss for Rye Cove.

Saturday May 12th, Eastside and Burton met to finish the contest and the Lady Spartans came away with a 2 to 1 win.                                   

IMG_2048-Copy.jpgMonday May 14th Eastside and Rye Cove met at UVA Wise for a 1-game playoff to decide the Cumberland District regular season champion. The winner getting the number 1 seed from the district, entering the Region 1D softball tournament.

The Lady Eagles built a 4 to 0 lead, through 3 innings, on just 2 base hits, taking advantage of 5 Eastside errors.

The Lady Spartans cut the lead in half, in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting a 2-out, 2-run single from freshman Cloey Bailey. Haley Byington responded , for Rye Cove, with a 2-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning to give the Lady Eagles a 6 to 2 lead.

Eastside rebounded in the bottom of the fifth getting a 2-run triple from Carrie Boyd and a run scoring double by Hannah Buchanan. With two outs Cloey Bailey came up big with another 2-run single driving in Hannah Buchanan and Anna Whited  giving the  Lady Spartans a 7 to 6 lead.

With 1 out in the top of the seventh Haley Tomlinson was safe on an error with the potential tying run. Eastside stopped the rally getting the final two outs on a force play and a fly out to left field.

Cloey Bailey led the Lady Spartans to the win with two hits and 4 RBI. Hannah Buchanan and Carrie Boyd each had a hit a two runs driven in for Eastside. Haley Byington  paced the Lady Eagles with a 2-run homer and 2 runs scored. Kennedy Taylor added a RBI base hit and scored a run.


Burton Ousts Castlewood

Tuesday May 15th, The Lady Raiders defeated Castlewood 3 to 0 in the, rain soaked, first round of the Cumberland District softball tournament. Bailey Sturgill struck out 6 and held the Lady Devils to 4 hits earning the win for Burton. Jamie Flanary went 1-2  with a double and a run scored. Tia Bates added a hit for the Lady Raiders. Gracie Hicks led the Lady Devils going 2-3 at the plate. Hicks also struck out 13, giving up only 2 hits in the loss. Lillie Sanders and Janakay Kiser each added a hit for Castlewood.

The Lady Raiders scored all 3 runs in the bottom of the second inning. Hannah Phelps drew a 1-out walk. Jamie Flanary and Akyssa Hollinger also walked to load the bases. Gracie Hicks struck out Burton’s Sarah Mullins for the second out of the inning but Phelps came in to score on a wild pitch. With two outs Lilly Redman was safe on an error that allowed Flanary and Hollinger to score.

The Lady Devils put runner on first with less than 2 outs in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not score.


Spartans Roll Past Rye Cove

The Eastside Spartans took their first step toward another Cumberland District Title with an 11 to 0 win over Rye Cove Wednesday May 16th.

Seth Boles totaled 10 strikeouts

Seth Boles allowed 2 hits, fanned 10, and walked 3 en route to the win for the Spartans. Boles also had a base hit in 3 trips to the plate. Cole Harness added a double and a sacrifice fly. Adam Ketron and Noah Rasnick each had a base hit and scored 2 runs for the Spartans.

Cory Hensley and Lucas Lane had base hits for the Eagles. Holton Carter took the loss for Rye Cove.

The Spartans carried a 4 to 0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Dakota Moore was safe on an error to lead off the inning and the flood gates opened. Drew Richards walked and Cole Harness was passed intentionally. Adam Ketron hit into a fielder’s choice driving in Moore. Harness scored when Peyton Pope’s fly ball was mishandled. Blake Rhoton got a free pass. Noah Rasnick was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Spartans. Seth Boles was also hit by a pitch scoring Pope. Dakota Moore came to bat a second time in the inning clearing the bases for the win, when his fly ball was dropped in the outfield.

Eastside and J.I. Burton will continue their District Championship game early next week, weather permitting.


Lawson Links with UNC Asheville

Eastside High School May 18, 2018 — VHSL Player of the Year, Luke Lawson, signed  today to play basketball at Division 1 UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs are a member of the Big South Conference. The Bulldogs won their second straight Big South regular-season championship in 2018 and made their third straight showing in the postseason, in the 2018 National Invitation Tournament.

In his career at Eastside Luke scored topped the 1000 point plateau. In his senior season Lawson averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks guiding the Spartans to the VHSL Championship game. The first in Eastside basketball history.

Before the signing Luke thanked UNC Asheville Head Coach Mike Morrell for the opportunity to continue playing basketball along with his education. He also thanked  his family, his Eastside Spartans teammates, Eastside Head Coach Patrick Damron, assistant coaches Dr. Matthew Cusano, Eddie Boles, Mike Strong, and Eastside Principal Bryan Crutchfield for everything they had done for him in his years at Eastside.
