Wise, Va. April 11, 2018 Shupe Field — Eastside’s Drew Richards scattered eight hits and struck out nine in five innings of work, leading the Spartans to a 13 to 8 non-district win over the Central Warriors last Wednesday at Shupe Field. Peyton Pope snared the two-inning save. Colyn Sturgill paced the Spartan attack, pounding out three doubles, and driving in one. Sturgill scored on each of his four at bats. Blake Rhoton added a pair of doubles and scored two runs. Nick Livingston tallied two hits and two RBI while Dakota Moore chalked up two hits and scored three times.
Bryson Collins had a big night at the plate for the Warriors with three hits, two RBIs, and a run scored. Tyler Muncy added a pair of hits and an RBI, scoring one run. Landon Elkins also had two hits and a run scored for Central.
Muncy’s single scored J.P. Stallard giving Central a 1 to 0 lead after one inning. Doubles by Rhoton and Sturgill in the top of the second inning tied the score, and Dakota Moore’s base hit scored Sturgill giving Eastside a 2 to1 lead. The Spartans put five more runs on the board in the top of the 4th inning with hits by Rhoton, Sturgill, Logan Porter, and Richards.
A base on balls, a Central error, a wild pitch, and a Livingston base knock plated two more runs in the Eastside fifth inning, giving the Spartans an 9 to1 lead. Zach James led off the Warrior’s 5th inning with a double scoring on Collins’ base hit. A base hit by Elkins and walk to Daniel Lawson loaded the bases for Central. Groundouts by Ben Brickey and Jordan Bishop drove in Collins and Elkins, cutting the Spartan lead to 9 to 4 after five innings.
A pair of hits by Sturgill and Moore, two Central errors, and a hit batter helped Eastside push their lead to 13 to5 in the top of the 7th inning. The Warriors drew back to back bases on balls to begin the bottom of the 7th inning. With one out, Jarrett Jessee’s single scored Bishop and James’ fielder’s choice ground out to second scored Stallard. Collins doubled, driving in James and making the score 13 to 8 with two outs. A single by Elkins and a walk loaded the bases for the Warriors, but Pope closed out the win with a strikeout.
